Bath County Release Records Explained
A Bath County case does not always lead to a Bath County building. The sheriff works from Warm Springs, but Bath arrestees are commonly housed at Alleghany Regional Jail in Covington. That cross-county arrangement is the first fact to settle. Call the Bath County Sheriff’s Department to learn which facility accepted the person, then contact the physical custodian. For the primary regional jail, the jail information line is 540-965-1776.
“Released” means that a custodian ended its physical hold under valid authority. It does not always mean the person entered the community. A name may leave a local custody view after bond, recognizance, time served, a court order, transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections, transfer to another jail, or pickup on a separate hold. Virginia’s jail standard requires staff to identify the person, verify release authority, and check for other jurisdictions’ holds before release. The destination on the exit record is therefore as important as the date.
Note: The state prison rule for release by 11:59 p.m. does not establish Alleghany Regional Jail’s release time.
Bath County Inmate Release Types
The release label points to the next record source. Bond and recognizance concern pretrial freedom under court duties, while time served relates to a term already credited. Parole is conditional release from state custody. Probation may follow confinement or may be imposed without prison. Transfer is not a community release at all. The Bath court file supplies legal context, but the jail or VADOC record shows whether the person actually left that custodian.
| Exit type | Meaning and next source |
|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | Pretrial release with court duties; check the Bath court docket and jail exit record. |
| Time served or sentence served | The active custodial term ended; read the sentencing order and dated release entry together. |
| Parole | Conditional community release; confirm the Board decision, VADOC release, and supervision status. |
| Probation | Court ordered community supervision; the sentencing order defines its terms and duration. |
| Dismissal, nolle prosequi, or acquittal | A charge ended in court, but another case or hold may still prevent release. |
| Transfer or detainer | Custody passed to VADOC, another jail, or another authority; the person was not freed. |
- Discharge
- Completion of the relevant custodial or supervision obligation, depending on the record’s context.
- Time served
- Confinement credited toward the active sentence, with the court order supplying the full context.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another authority to take or continue custody.
- Expungement
- A legal process that may restrict public access to qualifying records under current Virginia law.
Fields in Bath County Release Records
A release record answers an event question: when did the custodian give up custody, under what authority, and where did the person go? A live roster answers only whether the person appears in present custody. The official Alleghany site does not expose a public release-feed schema, so no field can be promised online. Ask for the booking and release sheet or a jail-management extract, and ask staff to explain any code used in the disposition.
| Requested field | What it may establish |
|---|---|
| Name and booking identifier | Links the event to the right person and jail stay. |
| Admission date and time | Marks the start of this custody sequence. |
| Arresting or committing agency | Identifies which office initiated the local custody record. |
| Charges, court, and bond status | Connects the jail event to the correct Bath court matter. |
| Release date and time | Records when this custodian’s physical hold ended. |
| Release category or authority | Shows bond, order, sentence completion, parole, or another stated basis. |
| Destination or transfer agency | Distinguishes entry into the community from continued custody elsewhere. |
For a state prisoner, VADOC identifies more formal release papers. Depending on the case, the person receives a notification-of-release letter, an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole. Applicable forms are signed and dated by the person and witnessed by staff. The official VADOC facility-release process illustrates that document trail.
Those papers support a state release or supervision event. They do not substitute for Alleghany Regional Jail’s record of a separate local exit.
Request Bath County Release Records
For a Bath arrest followed by confinement in Covington, direct the release-record request to the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office or Regional Jail. The office is at 268 West Main Street, Covington, VA 24426. Its office line is 540-965-1770, jail line is 540-965-1776, and fax is 540-965-4915. Contact Bath County Sheriff separately for an arrest, incident, commitment, or transport record. Ask each office for its current Virginia FOIA submission method before sending sensitive identifiers.
- Identify the person by full name, approximate arrest date, Bath connection, and booking or case number if known.
- Request an existing adult booking and release record, including admission, release date and time, disposition, and public transfer destination.
- Ask for an electronic copy and request an advance estimate if the reasonable actual cost may exceed a stated limit.
- Separate the booking-photo request from the release record. Ask the agency to cite each exemption used for a withholding or redaction.
- If the wrong office has the record, ask it to identify a known alternate custodian. Preserve the response and request date.
Under Virginia FOIA §2.2-3704, the public body ordinarily responds within five working days by producing records, citing a withholding, partially producing with cited redactions, reporting that records were not found, or invoking an allowed extension. The usual timely extension is seven additional workdays. Reasonable actual charges can apply, and a deposit may be required if projected charges exceed $200. No fixed local release-record fee was found, so confirm the amount before ordering.
Note: Virginia FOIA covers existing records; it does not require the jail to create a new release list or answer legal questions.
Bath County Release Record Access
Virginia FOIA policy and request rules govern access, while criminal law-enforcement records receive specialized treatment under §2.2-3706. Public and exempt fields may be separated. Jailers also keep prisoner and confinement information under §53.1-116, but that duty does not make every part of a personal inmate file public. A narrow request for the event, authority, and destination is more useful than a demand for the whole file.
Online visibility is not the same as legal retention. Neither Bath County nor Alleghany Regional Jail publishes how long a released name stays visible because no official released-person feed was found. Under Virginia’s records-disposal law, destruction depends on an approved schedule, expired retention, required approval, and the absence of a pending matter that blocks destruction. Removal from a web page does not show that the agency record was destroyed.
Sealing and expungement can also change public access. Virginia’s framework has provisions and effective dates that continue to change, including later versions scheduled after the research date. The current expungement chapter should be read for the event date and case type. A blank search result cannot prove that no arrest or release occurred.
Getting Home After Bath Release
The regional jail is outside Bath County. County planning material identifies roads, general-aviation access, and private taxi or limousine services, but it does not establish a fixed-route bus from the Covington jail into Bath. Anyone planning a pickup should call the jail for the current exit point and timing instructions, then make direct travel arrangements. The source does not establish a family waiting area or guarantee any carrier.
Do not travel to the Warm Springs courthouse on the assumption that it is the release counter. The courthouse and sheriff can help trace the case and receiving facility, but the physical custodian controls the exit process. Property return, account handling, pickup location, and release timing must also come from Alleghany Regional Jail. No Bath-specific gate fee, fixed schedule, or transport service was verified.
Bath Release Site Is in Covington
Bath’s historic courthouse and jail landscape can cause a second kind of confusion. Historical material describes an older jail near the Warm Springs courthouse, but that structure is not the operating detention destination. Modern Bath arrests follow the regional route to the jail in Covington, whose history dates to 2002. Old building references and historic images should never be read as current custody information.
The useful custody chain is simple: Bath County arrest or court commitment, transport to the confirmed receiving facility, release or transfer from that custodian, then any state or federal follow-on record. Each link has its own office and date. That sequence prevents a historic local address from being mistaken for the site where a person will leave custody today.
Note: Confirm the current receiving facility with Bath County Sheriff because placements and transfer paths can change.
Search Bath County Released Inmates
Start with identity and custody type, not a broad name search. Full legal name, a lawfully known date of birth, an approximate event date, and a case or booking number reduce false matches. Then work outward from Bath County Sheriff to the physical jail, court, state system, and any federal system supported by the facts. Record when each source was checked because status data can change.
- Ask Bath County Sheriff at 540-839-2375 which facility received the person.
- Call Alleghany Regional Jail and ask about present custody, the exit date, and whether the disposition was release or transfer.
- Search Virginia Jail VINE for a matching local or regional-jail person and use alerts for future custody events.
- Check Bath Combined Court and Circuit Court for the order, disposition, sentence, or bond context.
- Use the VADOC locator if state commitment, state transfer, parole, or probation may apply.
- Use BOP, U.S. Marshals, or ICE channels only when a federal fact supports that branch.
- Request the dated release record when the online systems do not prove the event.
The local official sweep found no 24-hour, 72-hour, or other released-person web feed, and no sheriff app advertising that data. The 24-Hour Release List route therefore begins with named-person confirmation and a request for any existing daily log, not an invented live list.
Bath Release Lookup Through VADOC
The Virginia Department of Corrections Inmate and Supervisee Locator covers people committed to state corrections and some people under VADOC supervision. It is not the Alleghany Regional Jail roster. A facility location suggests state custody. A community-corrections location may mean physical release with parole or probation still active. No result can mean that the person never entered VADOC, is outside public scope, uses another spelling or identifier, or has a data restriction.
| Search input or result | How to use it |
|---|---|
| VADOC number | Use it when known because it is stronger than a name-only match. |
| Full name | Check spelling and compare any available identifiers before accepting the match. |
| Facility or location | Distinguish an institution from a community supervision office. |
| Projected or anticipated date | Treat it as an estimate, not proof that release occurred. |
| Release, discharge, or supervision status | Read the exact label and seek dated documents when the history matters. |
The VADOC locator landing page shows the correct state search route.
A Bath defendant who left the regional jail on bond may never appear there. A person transferred from the regional jail into VADOC may appear even though no community release occurred. For date questions, the Projected Release Date material separates an estimate from the later actual release record.
Bath Release Records Need Two Courts
Bath Combined District Court holds the early trail for adult misdemeanors, traffic cases, and preliminary felony proceedings. Bath Circuit Court holds felony final dispositions and appeals. One jail stay can therefore connect to both levels. Search by defendant name, case number, or hearing date where the system permits, and read the charge, bond, hearing activity, disposition, sentence, and costs exactly as entered.
The Virginia Statewide Online Case Information System is the online starting point.
A court order can explain why release should occur, but it does not prove the jail completed the exit or found no other hold. If online circuit coverage is incomplete, contact the Circuit Court Clerk for the criminal file, final order, sentencing order, or release order. The local record room reaches back to 1791, though that depth does not override sealing rules, juvenile confidentiality, or case-specific limits.
Can a dismissed charge prove release? No. A dismissal, nolle prosequi, or acquittal may remove one basis for detention, but another case or detainer can keep the person in custody.
Correct a Bath Release Record
A documented Alleghany release may not line up at once with a criminal-history entry. Virginia Code §9.1-132 gives a person a route to inspect their own Central Criminal Records Exchange or arresting-agency criminal-history information and challenge an incomplete or inaccurate entry. This is a correction path for the subject’s own record, not a substitute for the underlying jail release sheet or court disposition.
First obtain the dated exit record and the final court document. Compare identity, case number, charge, disposition, and dates. Then use the statutory inspection and challenge process with the agency that maintains the disputed information. A stale open-looking entry and a lawful sealed entry are different problems, so preserve the exact response instead of assuming why a result changed.
Note: Correcting an error, sealing a record, and expunging a qualifying record are separate processes with different legal standards.
Bath Release Supervision and Reentry
Physical release may begin parole or probation rather than end the sentence. The Virginia Parole Board decides parole matters, while VADOC Community Corrections supervises people in the community. A Board grant still depends on release planning, legal checks, detainers, and conditions. A district-office locator result can show supervision, but it does not establish final discharge.
The approved residence matters. A Bath conviction does not guarantee that the person reports in Bath, and supervision may transfer. Use the VADOC office locator and provide a VADOC number when known. Do not ask for private case-plan, victim, family, treatment, or medical details. The sentencing order and official supervision channel answer different parts of the status question.
VADOC District 40’s resource directory names the Alleghany County Reentry Council and lists District40@vadoc.virginia.gov as a regional navigation contact. That contact may help locate post-release services. It does not certify that a person was released and does not promise access to any program. The Board decision, VADOC release papers, and supervision-office status remain the proof sources.
Bath Release Alerts Through VINE
Virginia Jail VINE is the prospective notification channel for a named person in a local or regional jail. Search through VINELink or call 1-800-467-4943. Match the correct person by agency, spelling, and available identifiers. Possible local events include release, transfer, escape, return, or death, but optional Alleghany events should not be promised without checking the live record.
VINE is not a durable Bath release archive. Notifications stop after release, and a missing person may reflect release, transfer, spelling, or scope. A key handoff also applies: local Jail VINE and VADOC’s NAAVI notification system are separate. Register again with VADOC Victim Services after a state transfer. If the person later returns to a local jail, register again in Jail VINE. Confirm a past event through the custodial record.
The Virginia State Police public registry is a separate, status-specific source for people who have a legal duty to register. It is not a broad Bath County released-inmate list. A match may show post-custody registration information, but it does not prove the release date or type. Absence from the registry says nothing about an ordinary jail or prison release.
ICE Holds After Bath Release Orders
No Bath County or Alleghany Regional Jail ICE detention facility or contract was identified in the reviewed official materials. Even so, a detainer can change the outcome of a local release order. The regional jail may relinquish its hold while another authority takes custody. Describe that event as a transfer unless the receiving authority confirms community release.
Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator only when immigration facts support the search. It covers certain current detainees, has scope limits, and is not a historical release archive. Likewise, U.S. Marshals custody concerns federal pretrial or transport status. Neither route is a general fallback for a missing Bath name. The local jail record should identify a public transfer destination when releasable.
Federal Search for Bath Releases
The Bureau of Prisons locator is useful only for a person in its covered federal population. It supports identifier searches with BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers and name searches with age, race, and sex filters. Result columns include name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. A past date or “RELEASED” location means the person is no longer in BOP custody, not that all supervision or other custody ended.
Federal data does not confirm release from Alleghany Regional Jail. A future BOP date is projected, “IN TRANSIT” may reflect movement under Marshals control, and the U.S. Marshals Service has no equivalent public nationwide roster. Use a known federal case and the correct federal district to trace that branch. For pre-1982 confinement, BOP directs historical requests toward National Archives records.
Where Bath Release Status Appears
Each source answers a different question. Read the result within its own custody system, then corroborate an important conclusion with the office that created the event record.
- Alleghany Regional Jail
- Confirms current local custody and may supply the actual exit date, disposition, and destination.
- Bath courts
- Show bond, disposition, sentence, and judicial authority, but not the final physical exit after hold checks.
- VADOC locator and records
- Distinguish state institutional custody, community supervision, projected dates, release, and discharge.
- Virginia Jail VINE
- Provides prospective local custody alerts but is not promised as a lasting history.
- BOP, Marshals, and ICE
- Apply only to supported federal or immigration custody, not an ordinary Bath jail case.
Is a projected release date enough? No. It can change with credits, orders, discipline, or recalculation. Seek the later status and actual dated release document.
Bath County Release Facilities
Bath County release research can touch five facility systems. The first two handle the local arrest and jail path. The remaining systems apply only when the sentence, charge, or transfer places the person under state or federal authority.
- Alleghany Regional Jail holds Bath arrestees and supplies the primary local release or transfer record.
- Bath County Sheriff’s Department / courthouse holding function identifies the receiving jail and may hold arrest or transport records.
- Virginia Department of Corrections facilities statewide hold state-committed people and document parole or discharge.
- Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities nationwide apply to covered federal custody, not a routine Bath charge.
- ICE detention network / U.S. Marshals custody applies only when another federal authority assumes custody.
A transfer between these systems creates a new custody stage. It should not be called release to the community unless the destination and event record support that conclusion.
